I've always loved this app, and was puzzled to find that it's received a lot of negative reviews. So, if your trying to decide whether to get the app and are spooked by the one-star reviews, here's my take on things. The difference between other weather apps and Dark Skies is like the difference between a telescope and a microscope. Most apps are like the telescope; they give you a report which is town-by-town, hour-by-hour, up to about a week or two in the future. Dark Skies is like the microscope, giving you predictions meter-by-meter, minute-by-minute, up to one hour in the future. A lot of the reviewers have bought a microscope when they thought they were buying a telescope and, never having seen a weather-microscope before, are complaining that it doesn't see far enough. Dark Skies isn't a substitute for a normal weather app, it's a totally different sort of tool which has never really been seen before; it's like having a tiny cybernetic meteorologist in your pocket. I'm not kidding, I've read about how it works... it's got a neural-network inside, like your brain! Crazy stuff - blows my mind. That said, Dark Skies will inevitably only be as accurate as your local doppler radar station, so it can't be expected to work all across the globe.

Dark Sky is completely worth the money. It essentially does one thing incredibly well: It forecasts precipitation. Which is ultimately what matters. I've used it for a few months now and I'm incredibly impressed. I love the pinpoint accuracy: "Light rain in 7 min, ending 10 min later." And it's always right, in my experience. This is the best forecasting tool I've found for actual chances of rain. Limited experience with snow so far but it seems to be great for that too. The Today Widget is awesome! I was so happy when that was released recently.

Cons: It doesn't really provide complete, detailed forecasts. It sticks to precip and temps. I do still use a 2nd app (Weather Underground) for more information, like the type of weather (storms or just rain?) Also, the radar on Dark Sky is terrible and I don't use it. It works, but the visuals are just odd and it doesn't use the standard radar colors. So I use WU for that too.

But Dark Sky is always my final word for current temp, forecasted temps, and amount of rain or snow. The forecasting ability, with pinpoint GPS accuracy, is just unreal. Buy this app.

Really nice update. This app is ready to replace most of my others. I really like the set-up with the 3 screens showing the immediate "current conditions within the hour" (really nice details page when tapping on this screen - glad you included dew point as that is a more accurate representation of saturation), daily conditions (really like the 'sky bar' that shows overcast and precipitation conditions), and weekly where you can get the 'sky bar' by tapping the days. Have had none of the reported crash problems (using iphone 5). The over-all color scheme was a bit odd at first but I find it better actually (more contrast perhaps). Accuracy is very good. I have several weather applications that pull from all sorts of models (including GRIB data). This one tends to be the most consistent. Some desired features: On the 'day view' one thing that might help is another hourly graph (either on the page or by tapping the 'sky bar') showing the precipitation/snow fall per hour as well as the total (both data points are very useful).

This app is awesome! It actually makes you feel in control of how you deal with weather. For example, I could check the weather all day at my desk to know when the best time to leave might be. Or I could have Dark Sky send me a push notification Hollywood style! Their people 'call' my phone. I can't tell you the number of times I've gotten a push notification and _exactly_ 15 minutes later... it rains. This is the only weather app I need. It is the only app that helps me decide, 'Do I leave now?' and 'Do I need an umbrella?'. I don't need to know what will happen three days from now because it will probably be wrong (excluding rare major weather events).

Usually I like to give some contrast for reviews... lets see... the app is polished, the radars are an order of magnitude better/smoother than anything else out there... ah maybe the colors are not my style.

In the end I would pay at least 2x what they originally charged ($20). (I also posted this review on the fast company article in the comments section).

For the first time, I wish we could respond directly to other reviews directly. BooperFish writes a nice list of things he wishes the app has. The problem is that the app has every single one of the features he is talking about.

If you aren't seeing what you want, try tapping on the screen. It matters where you tap – for instance, tapping on the "Map" will get you a satellite map with precipitation or temperature. Tapping on the black circle with the temperature shows you do point, barometric pressure, and something else I don't remember. On the second (third?) screen, tapping on one of the days will get you an hourly display.

I am not associated with this app. I just like it a lot. It is now at the weather app I use. I even deleted the other ones I had on my phone, because I never use them anymore.

DarkSky is an amazing hyperlocal weather application which has changed my life. I can't imagine going through my day without checking DarkSky. I love that it has implement location-aware notifications that will alert you when rain is coming without draining battery life. My favorite feature is the new iOS 8 notification center extension, now I don't even have to open the app before it's ready! I suggest this app to everyone who wants a bit more polish than the average weather app and would recommend it to city dwellers and anyone who has to walk outside on a daily basis (this is perfect for students!). I really love the estimates, where it'll tell you "there's about 10 minutes until some light rain, which will end 20 minutes afterward."

This is one of those things that sounds good, but where I would typically expect poor execution. To the contrary, I’ve found Dark Sky to be amazingly reliable. I live on the coast of Washington, a very rainy place, and I have to arrange outdoor work around the weather. Dark Sky is great because it lets me know when the rain is coming and how heavy it is likely to be. This gives me a chance to clean up projects before the weather comes in. It also makes me more productive, because I go ahead and work when I would otherwise wait out dodgy looking weather. Fantastic!

By the way, you should read the release notes. They’re usually good for a laugh.

I was on a float in a parade when rain was predicted. A lot of expensive equipment that needed to stay dry was on our float. This app was able to tell us when the tarp needed to come out and when it was ok to play on. I use it nearly every day before I go on a 30-minute walk to make sure I won't get rained on. It is phenomenal and I recommend it to all my friends. I'm not one to recommend pay apps lightly, either.

I had this app before the big update, and I'm sorry to those who liked that version better, but this app is wonderful as it is now. It went from an app I nearly uninstalled for good to an app I use every day with that update.

I find this to be the most useful weather app available. I'm sitting on Lopez Island, Washington State right now, and about 25 minutes ago, Dark Sky said alerted me with "light rain starting in 15 minutes."
This allows me to get the outdoor furniture cushions under cover.
By the way! Last night there wasn't any rain in the forecast...yet, as predicted, 15-18 minutes later it started raining.
I don't have any of the location issues others have spoken of. I've been running on an iPhone 4 until a couple of weeks ago, and now successfully on an iPhone 5.
I really like this app, and find it very, very useful.

I think the new widget it phenomenal. Others have complained about its simplicity, but when I'm doing a quick check of the weather in the Notification Center, I don't need or want a ton of detail and clutter. If I want detail, I'll just open the app.

When it comes to a widget all I really want to know is if it will rain, and what it feels like outside. Great design.

My only complaint is that there is no way to see a more detailed hourly breakdown. I would love to see that added as temperature can vary quite a bit in my area over a couple hours.

If I could only have one weather app this would be it. It is such a clean design and very accurate. I love the precipitation alerts and the weather map is the best I have ever seen. I wish they would put a temperature badge on the icon, though, so I could delete my other weather app that has that feature. :-)
