I know everyone hates long reviews but please read this
From the moment you see an exact replica of the original Sega Genesis cartridge to knuckles's sonic 3 physics you know that there was alot of love and care put into this version of Sonic The Hedgehog. I'm just gonna list everything that makes this game good, because there's alot.

Full iPhone 5 screen support, Smooth 60 frames per second, Remixed soundtrack that sounds almost identical to the original, 4 save files, physics that feel exactly like the original Sonic games, PLAY AS SONIC ALONE, SONIC & TAILS, TAILS ALONE, & KNUCKLES!

The only 2 bad things about this remake is that the special stages are REALLY hard to get used to. But if you fail a special stage then just remember the trick of exiting the app, and deleting from your multitasking bar. So when you start the app back up it sends you to the beginning of the special stage. Also in order to unlock Tails you have to beat the game with Sonic, and in order to unlock Knuckles you have to collect all the chaos emeralds and beat the game with Sonic. Oh and there's no iCloud support :(

This remake is AMAZING! The extra playable characters, added spin dash ability, multiple save files, achievements, time attack mode, and other nice details make this remake of Sonic 1 absolutely amazing. Sega has made me forget of their terrible Sonic Genesis remake thanks to this version. Every new and old sonic fan should get this game.

Ok.... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this update, I think this is awesome and I hope to see an update for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the future. I also love how I can play as Tails and Knuckles.......speaking of Knuckles, I found a glitch that sort of made beating the game impossible for Knuckles.... I think. I beat the game with Knuckles and I'm up to the credits and they show gameplay of whoever you beat the game with (in this case, Knuckles).....here's where it gets weird. In the part where they have Knuckles run through labyrinth zone, he goes through a current where he has to dodge spikes while hanging on to poles, but, he actually gets hit by the spikes and it restarts at the run through segment of labyrinth zone and the same happens until he runs out of the lives I have acquired during my run through of the game, getting me a game over. It brings me back to the main menu and I'm thinking, "What just happened?" When I choose his save file, it starts at Final Zone but Knuckles isn't there and the music isn't playing, instead you hear the faint "Ba-Bum" you get when you get hit or lose a life and the screen goes black and starts back at Final Zone, I can assume I just lost a life, and this happens until I get a game over.... again. So yeah, this is one sort of big glitch and I just guess Knuckles' hit box is larger than Sonic's or Tail's... Anyways, I love this update except for that glitch. Please fix it. Thank you.

This game was AMAZING! I really liked it! Sure it was troublesome at times, (don't get me started on Labyrinth Zone) but utter than that, this game is great! I want to address some issues. Sorry for boasting, but there are a few glitches and kinks in the system. I got all the achievements. I beat the clock in time attack mode. I got below 45 minutes. But the achievement does not show up in the Game Center or in the achievements menu! I even got a notification saying I got the achievement! And the debug mode is messed up. However, this game offers a hidden secret. A hidden 7th special stage with the 7th chaos emerald! To get to it, go to no save mode. Then, tap the letters s e g a when the argali logo appears. Then at the title screen, use two fingers to tap on the screen and swipe up. You'll be transported to a secret menu! Set the max emeralds to 7, hit go, then start on whatever stage you like! But beware, for you have to get the first 6 chaos emeralds first to get to the 7th special stage. And that stage is TOUGH! And also, I feel kind of ripped off when even visiting that stage doesn't unlock the 7th special stage for time attack. If the game developers fixed this problem, and the other glitches I mentioned, this would be more awesome. (Keep in mind I have NEVER beaten this stage yet at the time I'm writing this) However, other than that, this is actually a great game! Kudos to you, makers of this game!

This is it. This one game was and still is... an unstoppable force. After 25 years, this game is still making the ground it walks on quake. This is the FIRST TIME... EVER... we see Sonic at it running down Dr. Robotnik.

The difficulty is no different from the original version of the game. Labyrinth Zone and the 6 special stages are still really tough. Green Hill Zone is much more enjoyable on this version of the game, ironically. Now the music can be heard in whatever way, which I love. When this game is accessed on AirPlay? Oh god, that automatically shoots my review to 5 stars.

Unexpectedly, this game speaks to the masses. This didn't happen in original ports of this game. It speaks in every way. For one, now you can play Sonic in every location in the world. Collecting the chaos emeralds was seen as impossible in this game. However, this game has the emeralds speak to the player. That player gets the 6 on their first try and finally unlocks Knuckles. If I could rate this higher, I would.

You think you have the best game ever? It was made last week. Step up to the real world and play some Sonic the Hedgehog. You may not think this is the best game ever, but you have a new template and philosophy.

So i was bored one day watching sonic 06' cause why not and i was SO bored that i looked up "sonic" on the app store i see this game i get it and 12 seconds later I am adicted! Other than the amazing fun i had with sonic, I also enjoyed playing as tails. However i generally am terrible at platformers so i looked up a little cheat called "debug mode" so i can play as nuckles. The thing that was very cool however that in later ports of sonic 1 debug mode did not exist however it made it's return in this port! I have had hours and hours of fun in this game and i have not even tried time attack! Although the game can gt raging at times as well as a few glitches that got me stuck inside walls (especially as knuckles) considering this is the first main-series sonic game i have played i really, really, REALLY enjoyed it! I will defenatly buy sonic 2 and sonic 3 (or sonic 3 and knuckles) when it comes out or when i can find it because i havnt really found it.

I was starting to lose hope, the initial release of Sonic and Sonic 2 was pretty sad, all around they weren't that good of ports. Though with the release of the vastly superior Sonic CD port I started to have hope that Sega had listened to the criticisms (of the constructive sort) from they previous games ports and fixed them. Though I thought it could also be a fluke. Well with the re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog I am confident they had taken the criticisms to heart. I am looking forward to them giving the same love and care to Sonic 2 and here's my one big wish... The release of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.

Update - let me clarify, I commend Sega for listening to the reviews, realizing that the Sonic CD app made my Christian Whitehead was vastly superior to the other sonic games they had released on the iOS and decided to hand the previous games over to him. I commend him for making the game what it is, taking a great game and making it fun and stable to play on the iOS.

This is the exact same sonic I know and loved from the sega, with the classic "Seeegaaaa" sound at the begining to boot! This game is 100% worth it if you ever played and loved the original Sonic. For the people who want spindash or tails, neither were introduced until sonic 2. (as like... 500 others have already said lol) To add these they would have to actually alter the gameplay itself which I don't think Sega intended to do with this. I suggest just bugging sega to also release sonic 2 also, then everyone is happy lol. Anyways, all-in-all it is a great and classic game right on my iphone. It is perfect to just pick up and play when bored. And despite holding up a TINY bit when you have the music playing and a lot happening, it really doesn't affect gameplay too much at all (but would be nice if fixable. if not, no prob) If you are questioning getting this and like Sonic, go right ahead and buy it as i can almost assure you that you will be happy doing so. :)

Let's get the obvious out of the way first: Sonic is a legend for a reason. Far before the endless waves of 3D versions that ruined the franchise, the original Genesis incarnations were landmarks of the gaming industry and still stand the test of time today. If you've never played it before, do yourself a favor and try.

As for this version: Mr. Whitehead has made the seminal rendition of Sonic. The mastery and craftsmanship of this port is simply phenomenal. If there were a Criterion Collection for games, this title
would be the headliner.

Finally, if you own an AppleTV 4, do yourself a favor and download it on there, get yourself a controller, and play the best ever rendition of Sonic the way it was always meant to be played! SEGA should totally take note and release high-quality versions of all their Genesis classics on the ATV! (Ristar pretty please!!!)

Sonic 1 is my least favorite game is the Classic Series, but I still love it, I would give the original four stars. This version however fixed all of my problems with the original, has widescreen support, smooth gameplay, and they even added the spin dash which is extremely useful. The controls took a bit of getting used to, but I learned to get the hang of it pretty quickly. I really wish they would put this game on PSN, Xbox Live, and PC like they did with the remake of Sonic CD, but I'm perfectly fine with this. Definitely worth a purchase!

I love this franchise it's my 2nd all time video game series (right behind PaRappa the Rapper), not only does it have improvements, I'm really glad to play as tails, knuckles, and have tails along with me when I'm sonic, but I have to beat the game once to do all of that. I still hate labyrinth zone though, but the everything in the main game is still the same. Great job SEGA. Hopefully you'll remake Sonic Jam from the SEGA Saturn but just remake the overworld setting, I've been dying to play that game for 3 years!

Some people say the controls are hard to operate; at first! But after some time it gets very easy and smooth to deal with and the fact that you can change the position of the controls to anywhere on the screen and also change the transparency of the controls makes the game very enjoyable to play for hours. You can also play with tails and knuckles or both at the same time which is real cool. Its like childhood back and better. Thanks.

1. Debug mode. In 2.0.8 sound test is not working for example if you pushed number 1 it would change to number 11 so i think in 2.0.9 it will be fixed
2.eggman box. in debug mode an eggman monitor can be seen but I (SPOILERS) think in 2.0.9 it will appear
3. U.F.Os in the background. In marble zone ufologists were in the background but are not seen in the final product.

I never thought I'd get used to controlling Sonic on a touch screen, but I did and this game brings me back so much nostalgia that I'm loving every second of it. Maybe in the future I'll buy the other IOS Sonic game ports, but until then I'm enjoying one of the greatest games I've ever played. Thank you SEGA. You still get my business and support.

I was worried how the game would run on the iPad I got but it runs so smooth...and to top it off you get extras and the pristine programming by Christian Whitehead (who is responsible for Sonic CD's digital rerelease) that make an already great game even better.

...and being able to play as Tails and Knuckles too?! Heck yes this is a must-buy.

Awesome game! Please fix the Sound Test mode, it won't play the songs, it just changes the number of the songs instead. This means we can't access Debug Mode or Super Sonic mode. Also, please release this version of the game on a console or handheld system (or even Steam) so we can play with a controller on a bigger screen. Thanks!

This game is a lot of fun. If you grew up with sonic like me well...you have to buy this $3 game! You can unlock tails and knuckles and experience new gameplay like never before on the old sees genisis. Also there's a time attack mode where you can compete against your friends time and see who truly is the "fastest thing alive"!

Sonic the hedgehog is a great side-scrolling platformer with great pixel art colors and music. The level design is perfect and the unique play style of the 3 characters is charming. Every boss (except Labyrinth) is fun and fast. My only wish is that you make Sonic 3 and Knuckles on the ios.

You will be a master by the time you beat the game! Amazingly done! It is definitely well worth the $3 I spent! I love all the levels and I figured out how to get super sonic which is really kool! It is a challenging game to btw for those who like long games that are challenging, this is for you!

This is truly a fantastic game! It brings back some good memories of playing Sonic Mega Collection for the GameCube. I would absolutely love to see Sonic The Hedgehog 3, or maybe even a Next-Gen game! Great job, Sega, Sonic will forever be in our minds and in our hearts.

Great remake, but, for some reason the Sound Test isn't working... Pressing the button simply skips the sound number ahead (for example, if I'm on track 1, pressing play simply takes me to track 10) but doesn't actually play anything, meaning I can't access debug mode.
