Acorns: Invest Spare Change [iPhone]

This app is GRRRREAT. If you can't come up with the minimum investments requirements that many Mutual Funds require, that's no longer a problem. For what amounts to pocket change, literally, you can now invest in a diversified portfolio of ETF. The model is good for both those who have very little to invest as well as those who do invest, but may have a few dollars at the margins that they would like to invest but find it may not be cost effective to do so. Currently, at a dollar a month the fees are high given my low balance. But as my balance grows those fees (on a percentage basis) will come down.

Intuitive app, intelligent investment strategy, low fees (depending on position). The app is one of the most well designed apps in any genre... The investment strategy is relatively safe over the long-term (no guarantees in stock market tho) and the auto rebalancing is awesome! The flat fee of $1 a month is righteous.. They could charge so much more but, given their low cost model, they choose to pass on saving to customers and emphatically rebuke the high fee system of old. I also use a competing service that starts with a "B" and they charge WAY more if your auto deposit isn't at a certain amount each week (without providing alerts that tell you how to minimize this fee)... Not to mention their holdings aren't as apparent as ACORN and their app isn't as intuitive.

The app does great, and for very low fees. But, if you want to make money, you need to continue investing.

Where Acorns really shines is its ability to teach young investors the importance of saving money and helps them do it without any thought on their part. It's really for novice investors or those who aren't very familiar with the process. There are no fees for students which should be better advertised. That's a great deal - Acorns is making absolutely nothing on them but helping them build their wealth from a young age. If you aren't a student and want to start investing in Acorns, I'd recommend putting in a lump sum of about $1000 otherwise the $1/month fees will eat up any of your returns.

I have been using the app for 4 months now and I love it. The fees are reasonable and my account has been making some pretty good gains. Some people may complain about having losses but it is not the fault of the app but the inherent risk in the stock market. So I have been using Acorns a good 6 months now. I have invested $500 total over 6 months. I have made decent returns as well.
