Steamburg is a puzzle adventure game with narrative objects. Vincent, the main protagonist, needs to fight off evil robots from outer space and find his fiancée, who went missing when the robots launched their offensive against the town of Steamburg.
The game is set in a steampunk world in 1899. Vincent is a scientist, dealing with electricity and meteorology. Upon the robots’ attack he discovers a way to destroy them. He decides to return to Steamburg, overrun by robots, to test his weapon and to search for his missing fiancée. Through a radio he maintains contact with Bruce, the old mayor of Steamburg.
Elizabeth, Vincent’s fiancée, is the daughter of General Wells, commander-in-chief of the military base in Steamburg. Elizabeth used to be Vincent’s student at Steamburg University. Her father opposed their relationship for many years. It was not until Elizabeth had persuaded Vincent to grant the army access to one of his inventions that General Wells began to treat him with respect and gave his blessing to Elizabeth and Vincent’s union. The players learn this story piece by piece, guided by the narrative objects located in the game, including letters, handwritten notes, diary pages, bills or photographs.
The game begins with Vincent’s arrival in Steamburg. His idea for defeating the robots is quite simple. Several locations in the city have been fitted with giant Tesla coils. Robots always pursue and chase any humans they notice. Vincent wants to manoeuvre through the streets in such a way so that the robots hit upon the Tesla coils. Then the high voltage devices disable and destroy the robot.
Vincent has another weapon at his disposal: small, electrically-charged, bombs. Such a bomb cannot destroy a robot, but may disable it for a moment, distract it or activate a mechanism that will permit Vincent to move forward in the game.
In the North District Vincent manages to destroy the first robots and gain access to his observatory. There he searches for his invention, the Unclouder. It is crucial to his mission, as the airships, which enable Bruce to warn Vincent of advancing robots, are useless when the sky over Steamburg is cloudy. Vincent discovers that the Unclouder has been moved to the military base. Upon leaving the observatory Vincent learns from Bruce that the airships noticed a group of people hiding from the robots in the district where Elizabeth was last seen. Vincent moves in that direction. Having defeated the robots, he enters an old bomb shelter, where he finds a message from Elizabeth.
Vincent continues to engage in combat with the robots in three more districts and the fighting is becoming fiercer and more demanding. Once in the military base, Vincent finds the Unclouder. It turns out that General Wells has died in combat. In another shelter Vincent manages to speak to Elizabeth on the telephone. He walks towards Elizabeth’s hiding place. On his way there he stocks up on food supplies and weapons in his office at the University and his home. In a military bunker he learns from the radio that the army has failed to defeat the robots. When he finally reaches the shelter, he finds it shrouded in darkness and makes a grim discovery. There are multiple burned bodies inside, with items belonging to Elizabeth. Vincent is heartbroken. Bruce tells him to move to another bunker and wait for the troops which have begun to fight the robots using the method perfected by Vincent. When he gets to the bunker, he learns that Elizabeth has survived the robots’ attack and is now safe in an old lighthouse. Vincent refuses to follow Bruce’s orders and embarks on a journey to the lighthouse. To get there he needs to defeat the most vicious enemies – flying saucers that react to his every move. Once he successfully completes this final challenge, Vincent is reunited with Elizabeth in the lighthouse.
One of the game’s strengths lies in its excellent steampunk-style artwork.
An original score for the game was once again composed by Silver Rocket.
