ABC app is my primary news source - it's where I hear about almost every breaking story first. And it's free and ad free. So for that - 5 stars!
Having said that, the actual quality of the writing is no better than the others - in other words it reads like it was written by a work-experience kid who has no clue about anything and then reviewed by someone who doesn't really have time to review items before they go out. But that doesn't diminish the 5 stars because sadly that's just the cheap world we live in now and even the most prestigious mastheads are just as incompetent. Meh.
One thing that almost did take away the 5th star though is how Americanised it is. This is Australia's ABC - why it uses US idioms, spellings, and grammar is a mystery to me. Weirdly the ABC is actually consistently worse than the other outlets in this respect. Some dark agenda to Americanise us by our own government. Very strange. Maybe the cool leftie kids from inner Sydney who get jobs at the ABC are just so Americanised they don't even know they're doing it. The rest of us notice though, we see what you're doing and we don't like it. :-)

Excellent news service. May be a fraction bolshie compared to, say, Fox, but personally I do not mind my news leavened with a little empathy instead of unrelenting outrage. Unfortunately I don't know how to get a flat list of all the news; I only see categories like Just in, Top stories, World, and Finance. All of these categories may include an identical story on US interest rates, Saudi oil prices or an EU climate tax announcement. Would be nice if I could nominate the categories, in order, I want to see, then get a list of stories sorted by relevance. Just ONE of each story.
Also, make sure I can just flick sideways to the next story, rather than have to go back to the list. Then it would go straight to 5 and a half stars.

Some days I get a notification on my home screen but it's used sparingly for the biggest stories.

Everything you would expect from the ABC - up to date articles on a broad range of News topic. I love that I can look at the headlines (Top Stories) or at the topic that interests me most at the time (eg, sport, business, rural, arts, etc). I like that each story comes up with a brief description, so you can easily decide which stories you want to read in detail. I have the notifications turned on & find them great - now I never miss a breaking story or a major news item.

An independent ABC has been the cornerstone of Australian news reporting for decades. In a climate where news is becoming more biased and editorialised to fit corporate interests, the ABC is an independent voice that is more important than ever. This app works well and is a useful way to access the news anytime.

After the loo and the kettle, it's the first thing I look at in the morning. You can look at the main stories only, or hit the menu and choose from the many categories - local, national, world, art, science, health ...... the list goes on and on. Quality news in a free app.

It's simple to use and literally provides the news at your fingertips. You can simply read the headlines or read the whole article. New articles are uploaded regularly into the app.
It's a great way to keep update with local, national and international news.

I love the Age but I find the app slow and hard to open. The ABC app is easy to open. The wonderful index on the left takes me anywhere I want to go - so user friendly. And the reporting is objective and factual- very much needed in the "post truth" era.

Living in Shanghai I depend on the ABC to stay in touch with what is really happening at home and around the world. I feel I can trust the ABC's reporting which is something not always found in certain news services!

At this unfortunate point in time when people in positions of power in the USA and Australia, I feel a need to access truth in news. ABC provides it without fuss or doubt, thank you all girls, boys and others.

It gives you all the news as it comes in. Reliable, up to the minute,interesting and intelligence news broadcasting is what abc news app is all about. I couldn't live with out it. I love my abc.

The ABC provides quality journalism and accurate news. Their documentaries, entertainment and current affairs, not to mention, online & media, make it a complete quality package.
