How to make origami

The number of basic origami folds is small, how to make origami apps shows variety of ways to make intricate designs. The best known origami model is probably the Japanese paper crane. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. How to make origami will show how those Traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603–1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper or using nonsquare shapes to start with.

With most simple origami pieces, such as simple animals and airplanes, you can just follow the visual instructions. As the pieces get harder, you'll need to know the symbols for the different folds.

Colored and plain white bond paper is inexpensive and most basic origami creations can be formed with this paper. Experienced origami buffs use commercial origami paper, which is bit lighter than standard paper and is more durable as well. Also, these papers are colored on one side, which means the opposite side will be white. This helps in making dual-colored pieces.

Washi (和紙?) is the traditional origami paper used in Japan. Washi is generally tougher than ordinary paper made from wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts. Washi is commonly made using fibres from the bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub (Edgeworthia papyrifera), or the paper mulberry but can also be made using bamboo, hemp, rice, and wheat.

In Japan, the earliest unambiguous reference to a paper model is in a short poem by Ihara Saikaku in 1680 which describes paper butterflies in a dream. Origami butterflies were used during the celebration of Shinto weddings to represent the bride and groom, so paperfolding had already become a significant aspect of Japanese ceremony by the Heian period (794–118of Japanese history, enough that the reference in this poem would be recognized. Samurai warriors would exchange gifts adorned with noshi, a sort of good luck token made of folded strips of paper.

At first you'll likely need origami diagrams and instructions in order to fold your first pieces. There are several folds that are common to all origami creations, regardless of difficulty, that you'll want to learn. For instance, the mountain fold is when you fold the paper away from you while the valley fold is when you fold the paper towards you. The folding directions will indicate what type of fold to make.

The practice and study of origami encapsulates several subjects of mathematical interest. For instance, the problem of flat-foldability (whether a crease pattern can be folded into a 2-dimensional model) has been a topic of considerable mathematical study.

The action of folding paper precisely and creasing it can develop and maintain hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. For this reason easy origami projects are ideal for young kids, older adults, and even those who are recovering from brain injuries.

Wet-folding is most often used with thicker paper, however. Normal origami paper is very thin and thus prone to tearing when using the wet-folding technique. Yoshizawa believed the process was the most important part. He used to say, “ When you fold, the ritual and the act of creation is more important than the final result. When your hands are busy your heart is serene”.

It hardly ever happens that you have to make use of a scissor or blade while making doing the actual design of the origami piece. Most origami patterns need square piece of paper, and unless you are using a commercial origami paper, you will have to cut it to size. Hence, you must keep a good pair of scissors or a straight edged artist's blade handy.
