The best version available

Without exaggeration this is the finest traditional rpg in existence. Gripping story, unforgettable characters—Vivi may be the greatest, if not most adorable, video game protagonist of all time—and is a masterclass in storytelling and game design. It's hilarious, heartbreaking, beautiful, and fun as hell.

The 3D characters, battle environments, and animated cutscenes have all gotten a nice face-lift and feel right at home in 2016.

The hand drawn backgrounds, however? They were really something to behold on our old low-resolution tvs but suffer tremendously when blown up 4x their original size to fill a Retina display. Square lazily applied some antialiasing leaving the backgrounds feeling muddy and blurry, and it's jarring to see them behind such beautifully sharp 3D character models. At times it feels almost as if they're walking on top of the world rather than being in it.

Still. Don't let that dissuade you from playing—this game is a masterpiece, even by today's standards. And fortunately/unfortunately this is the best version of the game available to play (it's essentially the Steam version). Aside from emulating the original psx game and constantly adjusting the settings for each different background, this is best FF9 experience that can be bad.

I'm looking forward to a remaster some day—or a de-mastered 16-bit version, if a guy can dream—because I've seen the original painted backgrounds and they are stunningly detailed and deserve to be seen. But until then, it's easy to throw down $20 to have this 40+hr adventure of perfection in your pocket.

Just as great as I remember it

Absolutely amazing, even after all these years. If you've played Final Fantasy IX before then you'll enjoy the port. For those of you who haven't played it and want to try it, it's worth the price if you like the Final Fantasy franchise. Story and gameplay are flawless and the slight graphic update looks great. The controls are a bit odd and clunky at first but you will easily adapt. Those complaining about no controller support and thus giving it a low rating are not fairly judging the game. It's on a mobile device, the first thing you think of is mobility, not controller support. The game does have an auto-save feature that will allow you to continue from the last time the screen loaded to a new screen (walking through doors, entering new areas, etc.). This is very helpful as the game does tend to crash if you open up other apps on your phone. I was following a strategy guide that I had open on safari. Half the time I would switch to it and come back to the game crashing and half the time it was fine. This can be annoying at times but not a deal breaker. Just keep in mind when you decide to respond to texts and open apps. Try to avoid doing this during difficult boss battles. Options allow you to play the game with some added features like cheats which is a nice change of pace if you wanna mess around or care only about the story. Overall this is an amazing port of an amazing game, probably the best one I've seen to date.

Excellent port of a wonderful RPG

The game: Final Fantasy IX is my favorite in the series. The main characters are lovable with compelling story arcs. The fantasy steampunk world pays homage to classic FF titles with lots of callbacks to previous games. There's loads of humor, drama, and adventure, and a satisfying ending.

The port: Silicon Studio Thailand overall did a great job porting the game from the original PlayStation. The cutscenes are now in HD and look better than ever. The in-game characters have been remade with higher-polygon models and crisp, hi-res textures. You will notice that the backgrounds are a bit blurry, but sadly there isn't much they could have done about that: there's only so much you can do to improve low-res 2D drawings.

Best of all: there's a new "Skip Battle Camera" option in the menu that significantly speeds up the time it takes battles to load. There are also some cheats you can enable in the pause menu that give you max health, money, 3x speed, and more to enhance the experience.

This port isn't perfect but it's clear that time and effort was taken to make this port faithful to the original and even better looking, with nice new features. Highly recommended!

Best Final Fantasy Mobile Port

Just to preface - I loved this game as a kid and I went into playing this version with high hopes. Let's get the negative out of the way first. 1. I wish the resolution was wide so it fit the screen better. Minor gripe. 2. Sometimes the audio is weird. Sometimes during battles the sounds of attacks and spells don't play and all you hear is the battle music. This is kind of distracting. Positives - it's exactly how i remember it from my childhood but in s portable version. The upgraded character models are amazing and the higher res backgrounds look nice on a phone screen. Everything is kept true to the original game on the PSOne which is great because it was near flawless. I really appreciated the 'cheats' especially when I got to the end of the game and just wanted to focus on leveling my characters all the way up and accessing all their abilities.
I think that if you played this back in the late 90's you will be very happy. If you have never played it before I urge you to give it a shot. The story can seem kind of familiar especially if you've played the early FF games, but each character has a great backstory and deep progression. 9/10

So far a great port!

Let me preface that I'm running this game on an iPad Pro 9.7 and using a Nimbus mfi controller. After getting everything up and running this game runs really well and just what I expected. The backgrounds have not aged well over the years but for some reason they almost have a blended pastel kind of look to them. The real improvement comes in the character models and how much cleaner they are. You can actually see Steiner's goofy stare. They have also upscaled the menus in high resolution and the result is that character portraits look fantastic and way better then running the old PSone version.

For those wondering how the controller works; well it works almost flawlessly. I say almost because there seems to be a few items such as help, and the occasional on screen selection that doesn't have a corresponding button on the game pad. Overall I think this is how the game was meant to be played, and not with touch controls. I have heard people have issues on older iPads, but with the newer ones the game runs great.

Great job Square Enix! Best classic mobile revamp!

I’ve only played the game for a couple of hours, but am really enjoying it so far. It translates great to the mobile platform, and Square Enix finally got the controls right for a mobile Final Fantasy Port. It’s a vast improvement over Final Fantasy VII for iOS. The backgrounds have lost quality, but the pixel difference for 3D rendered characters is like night and day compared to the original. They did a lot of work here, really cleaned up the game, and it looks great. I think the dialogue has changed a bit, but am not entirely sure. Is this the version/translation that was previously only available with their super deluxe complete collection a year or two back? Anyone know?

I haven’t run into any bugs yet, great gameplay, great upgrade, and a great game.

I hope Square Enix considers bringing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core to iOS/mobile platform. It would be a great game for mobile play. I am going to guess that Final Fantasy VIII will be getting a mobile upgrade in the next year or two.

Excellent

About 3 hours in, the game port is excellent. Controls are much better than most other iOS RPGs, especially ports. 3D rendering of the characters is fantastic. There are a few things to get used to with the new controls, but all in all it's great. The only thing I've encountered at this point that I'd change is scrolling in the abilities/equipment lists, but the annoyance is minor and not enough to warrant a 4-star review; if there were partial-star ratings, it might be 4.75, but even still, it's a great port.

Note: the people complaining about the size of the game either forget or don't know that the original game was four discs, which can be upwards of 2.5 GB before the upgrades and changes to the game for the port to iOS. The game is nearly 4 GB installed, but that should be expected with these games that have quite a bit of great music and video as part of the experience. If they'd made it much smaller, people would probably complain that the quality is bad for such new technology.

Yes! Yes! 1000x yes!!

So excited about this! First let me say how amazing it is that what was once a 4 disc game on ps1 now fits on a smart phone. So far I've only played through the first act but this game is everything I remembered. Sure the graphics aren't HD but they never were. I don't notice any difference from what I recall of the original. I'm guessing this would be better on an iPad but for iOS, The controls work well for what they are.

I have ranted on more than few reviews about freemium games destroying gaming markets so I am so glad to pay the $16 for this full version of a game I know I can enjoy for quite some time exactly like once did. I'm very hopeful that they didn't have to cut out any content as the original FFIX had a ton of great side quest and collecting cards, etc. I'm also assuming that it will likely be hard on my battery but I generally would play at home in the evening so I can keep it plugged in. I look forward to diving into this favorite past adventure!

The last good final fantasy game

Finally on iOS, this is a great port with really good controls and high res geometry and shaders thrown in for good measure! The only downside of this is that it shows up the low res backgrounds.

As to issues, well some of the FMV's are a little jerky, and the enemies lack their status bars in fights which makes it kinda hard to know how much more you have to do or what stage of the fight you're at.

The game includes some cheat codes built in apparently in the pause menu. Personally I'd rather they weren't there as its not as if FF is a tough game but maybe they're good if you've got a kid that you want to introduce to FF and want them to feel amazing at the game.

Now for a small rant - If only Square would go back to the cutesy Kwai bobblehead look of this game and FFVIII for the Final Fantasy series and stop with the embarrassingly earnest Botox faced uncanny valley monstrosities (with punchably annoying lead characters) they've been pushing out since.

An honest reveiw

Ok first ill be completely honest.
1st- most people wonder is it worth the 20bucks..
So with that said the graphics compared to the ps1 are outstanding. The game play is smooth it has yet to crash or freeze on me. It has automatic cheats you can keep disabled or enable them. From all attacks being 9999. To master all abilities as soon as the item it equiped. And also speeds up time to get through the long talk scenes and skip the short scenes if you dont wanna watch them.

Im currently at dali which isnt that far into it. Im playing on an iphone 6s. So with all that said is the 20bucks worth it? I say yes id pay 20 bucks every time to play this game its my favorite final fantasy.

Ps- if anything happens or crashes ill be sure to update.
Hope i helped you guys/gals who are on the fence of wanting to buy it..

Ok well time has past and ive beaten the game i hve the iphone6 and it didnt crash or freeze on me once. Deff. Worth the 20bucks. Great game!

Great iPhone port

I haven't played this game since ps1 days and they did a wonderful job with porting this game to the iPhone. The updated characters look really good and they've done a great job with the touch screen controls. I also love being able to use the continue feature from the main menu when coming back to the game. I'm not so worried about saving constantly in case the game needs to restart after not playing for a while.

The soundtrack in this game is also one of the best soundtracks I've heard. The music goes perfectly with the environment and really brings you into what's going on. I've always been a fan of Final Fantasy soundtracks and this doesn't disappoint.

If you're a fan of RPGs and good games in general, this is worth the price for what you get. There's also the added feature to max out characters anytime to play through the story, but I personally like the challenge so I'm leveling and grinding as I go

Best iOS final fantasy port

I played the first final fantasy as a child when it first came out 20+ years ago (I just dated myself a bit) and have played all the rest up through 10. Final fantasy 9 is by far my favorite of the series. It has a great story, decent battle mechanics, and, to me at least, the best mini game ever in chocobo hot and cold. If you've never played the game, it is definitely worth purchasing.

The port itself is by far the best part that square has put out for ios. The slow world map that plagued ff 7 doesn't seem to be there (I am only on disk 1, however, and it may bog down later). The touch controls work very well and the boosts are great. I love that they added auto battle, 9999 hit, and fast forward. It makes grinding much easier and less cumbersome. I would suggest that they add a steal boost so that you don't have to try and steal over and over again.

All in all it is a great port and I highly recommend it!

Full of nostalgia!

This was my favorite FF from back in the day. Playing a ported version of this game reminds me why I loved it so much. It's how I wish newer FFs were especially in regards to the turned based system. I've read about some people have performance issues (no pun intended). I'm playing on an iPad Air 2 and I do have the occasional crash. That's to be expected tho. I just save often. It remedies that problem. Other than that I have had zero problems and even with that given issue, I still have nothing negative to say. This is the best FF SquareEnix made and I do recommend you play it again.

On a side note. If I had to complain about one thing, I wish this game came with mifi support so that I could use my Nimbus to play rather than touch controls. Definitely not a deal breaker as the touch controls are as flawless as they can be.

LOVE THIS GAME. BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES!

Keeping it simple, I have not stopped playing this game since ever since I purchased it. Brings back the good old days!

Gameplay wise, it was tricky at first on how to navigate walking around the town and controlling the Blue Narciss and the Grand Hildegarde 3 at first, but it definitely takes some time getting used to. Going through the menu was a little challenging at first but now it's not so bad, pretty easy to be honest once you get the hang of it.

Aside from that, battle sequence is great which is the same how it was in the Playstation. But having the game on an iPhone 6s Plus, sometimes the cinematics lag which is oretty surprising knowing i'm running on a 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution and an a A9 chip.

But then again, it isn't too bad, still a great purchase and an amazing game! Well worth the buy.

So glad this is on iOS

You may ask if this game is worth it. I'll answer that with I purchased this game last week already have nearly 20 hours on it. So many awesome memories!!

Movies look good and the character models do stick out a hair from the non-enhanced backgrounds.

Gameplay is smooth. I had one app crash and that was when I was switching apps as a battle was loading. My fault.

Is it worth the money? One word YES pay once and done!!! No gems to buy, no boosts to buy, pay it and forget. My only complaint on my 6s plus there's a frame which goes dead with your thumb so if you hit it you stop moving.

Tap to move on the map where you want to go. "Auto save" when you change rooms. Tons of available save slots. The card game works well. Auto play button so easier grinding if you're into that.

5/5 would ff9 on iOS again.

My favorite Final Fantasy game!! glad it's on iOS!

I'm so happy this game came to iOS! This is by far my favorite game in the series. Square ENIX did a great job cleaning up the graphics around all the characters. The characters look very crisp, clear & clean. The only thing I didn't like was there is a constant display of military time in the top left corner and a battery life icon in the top right corner. Both of which I have not been able to find a way to turn off yet. Also, another bonus was that they implemented cheats that you can turn on while you play via pause screen. These include, infinite life, extra speed so you don't have to walk slow everywhere, unlock all weapons, and one other I can't remember off the top of my head. The cloud save option is excellent as well! All-around a very good game.

Awesome game.

Okay so yes this game is awesome. I've always loved and been looking forward to this for some time. Everything is great but i have a few complaints. 1) no screen rotation. Please add this i would love to play with headphones in but on iphone 5s the headphones get in my way with current screen. 2) airship and gold chocobo are often difficult to fly. I end up going every direction except the one i want. Playable but could improve. 3) game restarts too soon when switching to another app for a moment. Otherwise game is great and plays wonderfully. No bugs or glitches encountered. No crashes. No slowdowns.

EDIT: screen rotation added. Love this game. Updated to 5star. Btw eiko/marcus glitch still works. And thunder slash still bugged.

Better than I remember

I've played this game after playing seven and eight. I really enjoyed both of them seven more just because it was my first and I had a great story but I also enjoyed eight in the battle system and all that. I remember playing mass and thinking it was too cartoony and the characters look weird and I just don't remember, Being all that into it. But now that I've started to play it again I don't remember going through all this stuff and it's like a brand-new Final Fantasy game that brings back memories as well highly recommend it. It's a lot of fun. And the music and the upgrades. They are all making this game a lot better especially on mobile platform really easy to play really easy to control just fun

Awesome port.

Night and day better controls over the ff7 port. Playing on a 6s+ and only see frames drop very rarely on battle scenes. Controls are awesome and integrated with touch. And looks like they spruced up all the character sprites. Don't believe me go bust out a ps1 and see for yourself. Worth the money if you loved the game. Nostalgia blast. Kinda of lame how people are giving it bad ratings because they have an old device. Works perfect for me. I will say, trying to play with headphones and or a charging cable is pretty lame. Headphones stab directly into the palm. But hey I use a Bluetooth speaker when I play and the power is not to bad cause it should rest above your hand for the most part.

So happy it came to iOS ! Best final fantasy game

Okay so not everyone would say it's the best final fantasy game but for me this was the first one I paid back in 2000 when it was out for PSone. I love how they upgraded the graphics! It looks gorgeous and the cheats they added on are pretty neat. Game plays well on my 6s plus and air 2. Also love you can save it to the cloud and play it in both device. Over all happy with this game purchase and everyone who never got to play this Final Fantasy should really give it a try!

Only thing that I would say that would be considered a con is that it doesn't use up all of the screen but I understand it's new and maybe could be fix with an update.
