Amazing Game, Amazing App. This Should Set the St

Sonic CD is STILL my favorite Sonic Game of the 2-D era, and is considered by many to still be the best game in the entire series. And finally, it's now forever a pocket's reach away from me. First Sonic Colors, then Sonic Generations, and then this. It's a great time to be a Sonic Fan.

Please know this port was created from the ground up. This game runs superb and it only takes about 60 seconds of playtime to realize a monumental effort was put into bringing it to the iOS, approximately 100% more effort than what was put into the Sonic 1 & 2 iOS ports. So far, the game has not run without a hiccup for me. Amazing. And it's clear the developers love us, they've included both the japanese and US soundtracks! Tails Too! Dare I say this is best version of the game?

The game itself is still as much fun as when I first played it. Fun and very replayable levels (much thanks to the time travel element). However, I've always hated the Chaos Emerald Levels, I'll go as far as saying they were probably the worst of Sonic's 2-D run. Still, this is very fun and I'm still in a state of shock how well the game runs. Hopefully they will put the same amount of effort if they choose to port Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Brilliant black sheep of the sonic canon

At first sonic cd seems like a bit of a letdown. The main story lasts only about forty five minutes if you don't take the time to "save the planet," but the grim bad future boss stages and uneasy "try again" ending point to the great adventure that lies in investigating the game further.
The game cleverly offers two ways of getting the best cinematic at the end: a series of special stages, if you play the game like one of the Genesis games, or a "scavenger hunt" through time that requires you to use the games time travel gimmick: hit a time post, then maintain a high speed for several seconds to warp to a new era. Time travel adds enormous replay value, and makes the game truly exciting and unique. The more time you spend with the game, the more you'll like it; it's a priceless moment the first time you work hard and get the best ending. The overall level of difficulty is quite low, except if you try to get the good ending ; it's quite hard to amass the 50 rings needed to reach special stages or the speed and post needed to warp to the past ( Quartz Quadrant's and Metallic Madness' first Acts are a nightmare in particular),
In short- buy this game! Visuals and music ( with two soundtracks !) are both great. It's the definitive Sonic experience ( along with Sonic 2).

Sonic CD for iOS

So, odds are you're looking at this game, considering its purchase. All I can say is, if you've played other versions of Sonic CD, you'll probably like this one, too. If you haven't played Sonic CD in your life, what are you doing reading this? Download this as quick as you can!

Ahem. On to the actual review. The game itself is typical Sonic fare, with a Time Travel mechanic thrown in for a major difficulty spike from playing through normally.

The controls, while responsive, are absolutely tiny. The jump button is about the right size, but the same cannot be said for the D-pad.

The gameplay feels almost the same as the Sega CD original. Gameplay is fast, with none of the annoying loading screens seen in the Gems Collection version. The spin dash is altered to Sonic 2 and 3's style by default (slower, but quicker to use), but can be changed. Tails is unlock able after your first playthrough.

One important note is the soundtrack. This gem actually uses both soundtracks, and you can toggle to one or the other. However, this feature may have been best if it allowed you to mix-and-match the soundtrack to your preference based on which zone you're in.

Overall, a solid port of a solid game. Now, stop gawking and buy it.

Time has been kind, and so has SEGA

At long last, this fantastic game is getting the attention and recognition it deserves. This is classic Sonic the Hedgehog at its finest, and it sits firmly in its place alongside the Genesis trilogy (and Sonic and Knuckles). But the most satisfying way to play isn't to just blast through the levels. You can travel through time and change the future. Stop Robotnik's plans before they can begin, and therein lies your key to success. Or you can collect the time stones if you want to take the more traditional (and easier) route. Explore the levels and save the planet! But the truly best part is that this is no emulation; built from the grouund up in an all new engine called the Retro Engine, Sonic CD really got the star treatment in its transition to modern platforms. Even if you played this game in the past on the SEGA CD, or one of its precious few ports, this is absolutely the best (not to mention the most affordable) version of Sonic CD available ever. And diehard fans will be happy to know that this latest edition of the game also includes not only the US soundtrack, but also the Japanese soundtrack (set to the latter by default, by the way). Buy it. ...NOW!

Great port and enhancements.

This is definitely the definitive edition of this game with all of its great additions such as Tails and including both the JP and US soundtracks; however, as some fan feedback, I would appreciate if this (along with the great iOS remakes for Sonic 1 and 2) was ported to PC for Steam, PS4's PSN, or Xbox One. I know that SEGA would have to be the one to greenlight such a project, but it would please people like me who typically don't play Sonic (but are attempting to get into the series with these iOS/PS3 remakes). Also, Sonic 3 & Knuckles on iOS could work as well as the previous installments' remakes.

SEGA is sitting upon many obvious gold mines in many ways right now, but they seem to refuse to even try to dig it up, instead being in favor in releasing/publishing games that are either unfinished (Sonic Boom) or rushed to meet a deadline (Sonic Lost World).

I know that Taxman & Stealth has already demoed a concept Sonic 3 & Knuckles iOS port (although not greenlit by SEGA), and I will be surprised if it hasn't began development yet, considering that this is yet another anniversary for the series this year.

Beautiful and Amazing game, now remastered to look

Breathtaking. This is super fun, its music is absolutely the best ( and is even on iTunes), and scenery and creativity in levels is beautiful. Get it now. All of my expectations...This just surpassed it thousandfold. It is epic too. This is Amy and metal sonics first game. And now you can unlock tails in this! No flaws, nothing short of the best gaming app. Buy it immediately. This deserves a billion stars instead of 5! And also, the few bad ratings on this game I've seen from people are kind of stupid. For one, people complain about the black screen and give this a bad rating because of that. It isn't sonic cd's fault, its your device's. Also, people are mad that sonic boom isn't in the opening... Well, You have the option to listen to both JP and US soundtracks, just change it in your settings. I saw another one that got a low rating because there was no option to listen to music. There IS. But it's unlockable, you have to get good times on time attack to get it. It is called DA Garden. So this game is nothing short of beautiful, breathtaking, amazing, awesome, cool, and fun. BUY IT NOW!

Omg

I have been waiting a LONG time to play Sonic CD on my iphone and I have to say hats off to SEGA, and everyone else who worked on this game porting it over the iOS, I love the menu format, sliding through the menu is smooth, and very responsive, gameplay is also incredibly smooth, i thought it would be lagging like it was in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but there has been NO lag or slowdown what so ever, controls are actually responsive, they are spot on the best controls I've played on a sonic game on the ios (I also played and own sonic the hedgehog 2) the asking price for 2 dollars is VERY great! I was thinking it was gonna be like $9.99 but this is a real cheap price for a really great game ;D buy this game now, also love the fact how I can switch between the American and Japanese soundtracks for each stage, keep up the good work SEGA again best sonic game I have played on the iOS, love it bought it the first minute it can out, this Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors are the best Sonic games to come out and show us that the blue blur still has tricks up his gloves.

amazing port

UPDATE: I didn't give up, and it took a while to become acclimated with the controls. I'm still not 100%, but WOW is this an amazing sonic game. I played all of them growing up on the genesis, but never this one. Easily the best, and the hardest. Love the past future concept, and I feel the replay ability is going to be pretty long. Bravo on the port. I still wouldn't mind some other control options to play around with.

Original review:

I really wanted to love this, and based on the reviews I downloaded immediately. Much like the Mario games of it's time, the sonic games required very precise control. In this version, which is still superior to Sega's own emulation controller, it's still very hard to make precise movements, since there's no feedback. Furthermore, I find myself making incorrect moves. Unless I'm looking at the dpad, I can't seem to get the right feel, and of course - you can't take your eyes off this game. I almost feel as if I'd do better with a larger dpad, or a little more dead space in the middle.

Great game

Unlike the other top 25 games on the app store, this game has depth. People complaining about this game being too difficult, or being a terrible remake make me want to pull my hair out. Duh it's going to be a little challenging, especially, if you want to get all the achievements, that way it's actually REWARDING when you beat the game! THIS is a game, with love put into every pixel. tax man and sega rebuilt this classic from the ground up in wide screen HD. People complaining about this black screen: try restarting your iOS device, then launching the app. If that doesn't work, delete it, reinstall it, restart your phone again, then it should work. tl;dr this game is incredible, and it's going to take you a few hours to complete, and several more if you intend on unlocking everything. If you're considering downloading, I'd do it now, I believe the price goes up to $5 on the 19th..

Quintessential Sonic

Before the US got this, I got the Japanese version and loved it -- Unfortunately someone loved it too and stole it from me. It was a very expensive import so I waited until it came to the states and bought it again. I was mortified at the lackluster music and have wanted to play the game again with the original Japanese music since the early 90s! I am so glad that such a great job was done for this port. As everyone has said, this version not only plays very well, it has extras including playing with either soundtrack, playing as Tails, spin dash attack (two kinds) -- if you ever played this, you'll want this. If you like Sonic, you'll want this. If you've never tried Sonic, now is the time to discover the game, to me, that is better than all the others.

Side note: Go to the PAST on the 1st couple of levels, … the music is so great and they're so fun to play!

Best game on the App Store

This is a really solid game, that a lot of people missed out on in the 90's. Everything is great from the music to the controls, the levels, and even the menus. The the controls are great for being on a touch screen, but they're not perfect, I find myself messing up every-now and then. I'd recommend playing this with a controller if you have the option, its not needed though. Another thing I loved was the catchy 90's music and having an option to choose between both JP and US soundtracks was a smart decision. The game itself has some of the best level designs in any sonic game and they have a lot of replay value since

Sonic CD is well worth the two dollars and offers a lot of depth that's missing from most games on the App Store. I'd recommend this game to anyone who loves games since its easily accessible and loaded with fun.

Please optimize for Iphone 5!

Luv this game

This game is awesome. Hey SEGA, can you do an update and add Metal Sonic as a playable character? Just put his sprite in the same stages and bosses as sonic but with no cutscenes. Or if you really want some high ratings, make his storyline start with the opening scene from the 1999 sonic movie, make his story end at Stardust Speedway with a race against sonic and a short cutscene of Metal Sonic kicking Sonic off of Stardust Speedway, then ditching Robotnik before he can issue his next order. That would make Metal Sonic fans everywhere happy. Just imagine the ratings! Please take this into consideration, and take your time on it so it turns out awesome :)

A real Sonic game, it needs an update!

I feel that this is truly the best Sonic game for the iOS but have a bad feeling that it will never see another update to work with the latest iPhone models out now and the future which is a sad thing. Sonic CD is one of those classic games that has aged very well and still a blast to play.

I wish someone inside Sega would grow a brain, update this app and it will still sell with the best overall presentation from it's beginning on the Genesis and Sega CD, the best game for the platform and a well made game for mobile. Sadly it's now once again, stuck in the past.

Please update this gem for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus!!!

True icon!

This blue speed demon is back at it again with something better up the sleeves of the enemy. He must end the plot of Dr. Eggo and his creation... Sonic's robot twin, Metal Sonic. He also meets and saves Amy Rosy the Rascal and travels time in the process, so I'd say this game is worth your time!

This game requires skill! You have to be skilled to crush this game! That is what I like about this. This is an amazing job done here. It is very difficult to see major problems, so I will leave it right here. 5 out of 5 stars.

An instant classic

This game no doubt is one of my favorites and can't stress this enough that if you could, can you add some stuff in this game? Maybe more stages and bosses? maybe Amy or Metal sonic being playable. Of course you don't have to but I fell like if your not making a port of sonic 3 and knuckles you should do this even though I still want that game. . Could you also make a port of the sonic advance series? Thank you

Perfect but fix iPhone 6 plus screen issues

This is the best port ever.....period. The onscreen controls are absolutely flawless. Anytime that I died it was purely my fault and not the touchscreen controls which happens with every other app. Simply butter smooth frame rates and exclusive content make this a must-buy for everyone. The price is perfect and I would even pay $5-$10 for this port. Thank You Sega. Hopefully you use the Retro-engine to re-release some of your already available titles and use this in any new titles.

Great must have for anyone

The sonic the hedgehog cd app is a must for all fans of the 2d sonic games. It plays just like the original ( which I have ) on the sega cd or mega cd by having both soundtracks and all Easter eggs in sound test and da garden and cutscenes. Also for the first time u can play as tails and discover art for a never finished stage. The game is great I have experienced no lags or major glitches on the iPhone 4s. Although the game is great please sega make a sonic 3 and knuckles

Cooky castle

I think Cristian whitehead to add a new level called cooky castle cuz you know that thing in the D.A. garden that takes place of the egg man statue? That would be cooky castle and you only get it if you either use the stage select or getting all good futures until metallic madness then after metallic madness to get the good ending you have to get the cooky castle good future to get the good ending. But still this is is a good game and needs desert dazzle!

Best Port Ever but update for 6 plus

great save feature, contains both US and Japanese soundtracks, controls great, and excellent replay value. I waited a long time for the perfect port of Sonic CD since the CD Rom version back in 1996, and Christian Whitehead has made this under appreciated classic better than ever. The only thing I have to say is please update for iPhone 6 plus. The screen size should fill the whole phone. Thank you!

Love Sonic games, appears two are missing.

These are great, and the controls aren't, surprisingly, unresponsive like in most app games. One thing though, Sega. Why would you put Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 4 on the App Store, but not include 3 and Sonic and Knuckles? You know people would buy them, so it only makes logical sense. Of course, as we all know, Sega doesn't always take the logical step. That's why we get garbage like Sonic Unleashed. ;)
