The greatest story ever told

....(sigh)....I would like to take a little time to talk about possibly the greatest RPG of all time...Dragon Quest 5. So its been a little over a month now since I've embarked on this unforgettable journey through the breathtakingly emotional Dragon Quest saga, and I can't possibly stress the words "breathtakingly emotional" enough because its taking all I have to hold back tears while I am writing this review, as I have just beaten the main story and the entire 45+ hour experience is still very fresh in my mind.

I've stated in my review for Dragon Quest 4 that the storylines (very much like the ones for the Final Fantasy ffranchise) become more and more engrossing and emotionally potent with each and every release, always wondering to myself "how on earth can they possibly top this?!" Well my friends, I believe I have finally reached the very pennicle in story telling, the true holy grail of RPG storylines...behold...Dragon Quest 5.

Ever since I made the choice to play all the DQ games on the app store, I think I was always most excited to play DQ5 more than any other title in the franchise (along with DQ8) due to the fact that I've seen multiple video reviews on youtube and other such sources that Dragon Quest is among if now the most loved, and most critically acclaimed installment in the entire series, saying that it is one of the greatest RPG's of all time, mostly due to its extraoridinarily well told storyline, and I don't think I could possibly conqer with anything more if I tried. The game spans ove three generations from you and your father, to your very own children. starting out the game as a little boy at your father's side to rescue your long-lost kidnapped mother, to growing into an adult and getting married and having kids of your own, and the way the beyond brilliant writters spanned the time between generations, chock full of UNFORGETTABLE bonds and friendships, as well as some of the most heartbreaking and forboding events in videogame history, is absolutley nothing short of miraculous. See, just as I was writing that last sentence, all those heartbreaking moments came flooding back, and I had to pause to hold back a few tears. Not all is despaire however, because this game is filled with enough amazingly heartwarming moments to sort of balance it all out, and I think it was the heartwarming moments that had me crying like a baby. I really truley can't ever say enough good things about this storyline you guys. As a matter of fact, as far as pure storytelling goes, I think I would have to place Dragon Quest 5 as the greatest storyline of all time, even above Final Fantasy 7...(wow). Aside from the out-of-this-world storyline, there exists one of the very best battle mechanics I've ever played in an RPG. I of course am referring to the totally A-W-E-S-O-M-E monster recruiting system! Its like a wonderful mix of Pokemon thrown right in! You can travel the world and recruit a wide array of different monsters that you randomally encounter, with an equally vast selection of weapons and armor to outfit your new furry friends, as well as many monster exclusive spells and abilities that really give birth to nearly infinite strategic possibilities. One of my very favorite parts of the game hoever is the fact that after a long day of piliging, you can kick your feet up and get lost for HOURS in the biggest and most exciting collection of mini games I've ever seen! From the casino which includes poker, slots, monster arena, and even introducing slime races, and the almighty totally friggn' awesome as @#$% T n' T board game!!!!!!!!! Even a fun litthe arcade game called "bruisn' ooze", which is essentially a slime themed whack a' mole!!!!!

I have been a huge fane of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series ever since I was a little kid. With the amazing storytelling and the gorgeous animation, It only makes since that some point in my like I would eventually gravitate to the Dragon Quest games, I just wish it wouldnt've taken me this long. I mean considering that it was created by the same people it was bound to happen sooner or later. I suppose I can place the blame on the fact that Dragon Quest never got the very much deserved recognition and popularity in the states as it did in Japan...oh well. All that matters now is that I have it in my life now and I am never letting go. I know that I've thanked the Square Enix team in the past for bring these essential RPG classics to the app store, but I just wanted to thank them again...THANK YOU SO VERY VERY VERY VERY MUCH SE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next stop...Dragon Quest 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow

I am so excited to have Dragon Quest V on iOS. It has been one of my favorite games since playing it on the DS. (So nice to be able to disguise my game playing with a phone/iPad. At 28 I feel a little silly carrying a DS in public—that alone is worth the price.) This has one of the best stories of any game I've ever played and I love collecting monsters (even though I rarely use them).

Seems to be running great so far (text was a little blurry on iPad Air but I got used to it after a few minutes. Probably better, graphics-wise to play on iPhone as the sprites appear almost too pixilated on iPad). DQV follows the same "portrait mode only" as other Dragon Quest games and even when the controls are set to "small" size, the D-pad is a bit oversized on the screen (especially considering you can move without it).

I'm also glad they included iCloud, as a couple of the last DQ games they released did not include that feature.

Overall, completely worth the price.

Autosave does not work in dungeons - otherwise PER

This is one of my favorite RPG franchises of all time. I've played them all on console and portable and keep coming back to this one because its storyline is superb. I give it five stars.

My only gripe with this - and the others - is this... this version is for a mobile device - iPhone or iPad. There have been a few times where I was waiting in line someplace, pulled out the phone, and started playing... but I had to stop because whenever I entered a dungeon, I knew I couldn't save my progress. Autosave works great, EXCEPT not in dungeons! I don't understand how such a silly limitation could be placed on a version of the game ported to mobile devices... I've lost progress several times because I had to quit in the middle of a dungeon - only to watch the game reset upon executing it again...

I hope this issue is addressed in the future, it is a limitation that really makes no sense whatsoever.

Addictive Well-Written RPG In A Classic Style

I played Dragon Quest games as a child on Game Boy and got back into them recently. Always played the monster games and not the plain old Dragon Quest, but this one I was told has monsters. And it does! And it’s cool to build up a team of them though it’s certainly not the focus of the game. The focus here is a well-written interactive story that’s touching, engrossing and funny. The port to iPhone is excellent, can hardly tell I’m not on a Gameboy. And it’s hours and hours of play too – I’ve played 24 hours so far and I’m still playing. It’s not some fly by night hacked up mobile game, it’s rich and gorgeous and fun. I hope this introduces more people to the fantastic Dragon Quest games.

One of the best in the series

This is the definitive version of the DQV remake, and DQV itself is one of the best in the series. The storyline was sprawling and revolutionary at the time (and still is!). Classic Dragon Quest gameplay, refined.

The iOS version is like joining up the two DS screens and taking out the gap, and upgrading the resolution. It looks and sounds great on iPhone and iPad, and you can play it one-handed on your phone. It is uniquely suited to portrait mode due to being played that way on the DS (just on two separated screens instead of one joined screen). It's a little weird playing with touchscreen controls, but again, you can play one-handed!

Awesome!

I love this game, it's so excellent, it has everything I like in an RPG that I grew up with, it's sprite characters in 3D environments like XenoGears was, and also like XG allows me to see the environment from any angle and search in anything, dresser, wardrobe, clay pot, barrel whatever... The fighting is great, the score is clear and well done, I love this game, I never got to play this on the DS so even better for me. Love how the merged the top and bottom screens from the DS into one screen, that's why there will never be a landscape mode people, it's an adaption of a port from the Nintendo DS, what would you expect.

Outstanding, 12 hours in

It is a terrific game. Easy to control. Great story. Beautiful original graphics. IGN review and guide is helpful. Since the game save method is true to original, I don't play it when I only have 5 minutes. I had to read IGN review to understand when and how to save. I haven't left it running in the background for more than 5 minutes and I have not lost a game bringing it back up. The point here is it is a fully developed and produced game, and it shows. Worth the cost.

Best Dragon Quest!

I’ve played all Dragon Quest and V is the best one in my opinion. I played this game for the first time back in 1992. I was in Japan at that time and I remember how everyone was so deeply engaged with this game. Since then there were many versions, but the core story is the same. Trust me, you will be playing this 24/7. A truly classic in every sense. If you are fan of RPG, this is a must for your collection.

Great Old-School JRPG

I liked DQIV but I like V even more after 7 hours of playing it. The story, locations and characters are so far really interesting. The Story being the strong point.

It is old-school and kind of simple gameplay wise. I like these old-games once in awhile though. If only square would release Chrono Trigger with these 2D/3D mixed graphics for iOS...

Great game!

Finally DQ 5 is here on iOS! Great job SE while I agree this is possibly the best game in the series, I think it is unreasonable to expect landscape mode because you don't want to hold your iPad "upright" for whatever reason. No there is no quick save, but if you are too lazy to save at the church you probably shouldn't be playing lol

Amazing game and story

Game runs smooth and fits entire screen on iPhone 6+. The only negative is no voice acting. Game auto saves if you leave game suspended of activity for a time and quick save for dungeons/traveling. The story to this games is interesting. I recommend dragon quest viii and v as they are perfect to me.

I Noticed A Few Bugs

While playing through I notice a few bugs. When you use zoom it causes a bit of lag in the game. And sometimes the music will skip for a fraction of the second without finding probable cause for this I recommend you look into this. Other then that it's a great game and runs smoothly.

Glad it's here.

An epic game more than worthy of the Dragon Quest title. This is the most awesome of DQ games. Make a choice halfway through that will decide fate for the rest of the game!

From monster recruitment to watching your hero grow from childhood to parenthood, it's all amazing!

The best of Dragon Quest!

This game is perfection. The multi generation story line where you can get married and have kids is excellent and the rpg is old school awesome. Do your self a favor and experience one of the greatest challenging game of all time!

Very pleased!

Only negative I have come across is there is no option to switch the top/bottom screens for battle. Loading times are excellent, sound is good. The controls are awkward at first, but quickly learned. Overall very pleased!!

Rpg heaven

This is the one I've been waiting on! Have them and all and each one is awesome in its own right but this one is very impressive love the collecting monsters and lots of different things about this one. Worth the money.
