One of the greatest of all time

One of the greatest games of all time in the palm of my hand. The final fantasy 7 of the DQ SERIES. This game only deserves 5 stars. NO ISSUES at all. I don't know how people complain about this version. Playtime is over 80 hours on my file and I am doing the post-game. This game was 60$ on the ps2, and would gladly pay that for this version but it's a lot cheaper. If you have never played a DQ game, this is the perfect game to start with. If you like RPGs then download immediately. In the same class as chrono trigger FF7 xenogears. I still play through the original PS2 game almost once a year. If you like RPGs then download this immediately and I promise you won't regret it. Totally worth the money. I have had no issues on iPhone 5. Quick save works fine and can use other apps without losing your place. It will only restart if you stress the phones ram by loading numerous games and webpages. If you just text, call and minor web browsing it won't reload. The game looks great on the retina display too. There is no voice audio, but doesn't bother me a bit. it would just double the size of the file. And you cannot play in landscape view. Scared at first but surprisingly it didn't bother me a bit and was actually preferring the ability to play with one hand. Those are the only 2 things that could pose a problem to a minor few people. OMG DOWNLOAD IT ALREADY

Good port

Standard Dragon Quest RPG with turn based battles and 3D environment. If you're an RPG fan, may be worth picking up :)

My main concerns about buying this were around the quality of the port and features to make it easier to play on the phone, so I'll talk about that. I'm about 12 hours in.

The virtual joystick for 3D motion was very well done, and it can be used with either thumb. Camera controls are OK but not something you need ALL the time so it's fine. Menus are definitely optimized for mobile and work well. I haven't felt like anything is cramped for space playing it on an iPhone 6 (the small one). I'm pleasantly surprised at how well this game runs on mobile.

In addition to the original limited save options, they have added a quick save which can be used when not in town, and a fairly frequent auto save. When you want to save and stop you may have to quickly finish a battle or run outside, but generally saving is not too far away if you have to do so.

I remember seeing some reviews complaining about cutscenes - just wanted to say that at 12 hours I haven't encountered any scenes without visible dialogue. Also, there is background music.

Only one crash so far, seems pretty stable.

No problems so far on iPad Mini

I hesitated to buy this game because I was worried about my iPad mini not being able to handle the app. So far I have played the game a total of 3.5 hours, including playing for a period of 1.5 hours straight without a crash. I still save a lot to be safe.

I have never played this game before, but so far I like it a lot. Would have wanted the voice acting, but can not complain about that too much considering this is a 100 hour game that looks beautiful and only takes up 1.6 GB of space on my device.

Also, have not really minded the portrait view too much. It is fairly comfortable for an iPad mini. Would have been a bigger issue on a full size iPad. Definitely like the ability to auto walk, it is very useful on the world map.

Overall very pleased with this port so far. It is nice to have a game of this magnitude on the iPad.

Update: I have now played about 7 hours and have had one crash. Was not a big deal. The game has an auto save feature that made it so the crash only resulted in losing about 1 minute worth of playtime. Considering this, game crashes are not much of an issue with this game.

Please remove the bandana in SHT!!

After playing this game for a while it noticed a few things. First of all this is the Japanese version of the game with english subtitles. Most already know that the music and voice acting won't be in this and not just because it's a port, just because it's the Japanese version. One main improvement of this version is the auto save and quick save function so you don't have to quit a dungeon and go all the way back to a church to save. The animations are still good as the ps2 version which is great. However, the Japanese version of the hero does not remove his bandana when he gets into super high tension! As I said in my previous review, I bought this game because it reminded me of DBZ. That small feature sold the game for me. Please bring it back! Now off that tangent, the music and no voice acting is no longer a problem to me. You can get use to it over time. This is one of the best RPGs out there and it is very convenient to have on your phone do buy it!

A RPG classic.

A portable version of one of the best RPGs on the PlayStation 2. What's not to love?! Easily one of my favorite RPGs in the series and in general. The absence of voice acting is rarely ever a concern for me, but it does hurt Dragon Quest VIII a bit after knowing how fantastic the voice acting was in the original release. I especially miss getting to hear Yangus' colorful dialog. His "'Cor blimey, Guv" just isn't the same without the original voice acting. The controls take a moment to get use to, but they are not that bad once you get the hang of it. The controls feel significantly better and more intuitive when you reorient the movement controls to the bottom corner of the screen instead of the middle of the screen. Definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the series and/or traditional turn based RPGs.

Impressive!

This is a localization of the Japanese port of Dragon Quest VIII, so it lacks the fluff that Americans (and Europeans?) got when that was localized. It's a gorgeous game, it sounds beautiful despite being midi this time around, and it's surprisingly efficient! My iPod Touch 5 isn't even listed on the list of compatible devices! Yet only two crashes that weren't a big deal (and probably my fault).
I really like the one handed gameplay (I had to make the wheel smaller, though, via the misc menu). I feel that I'd have like a landscape mode specially with all the MFi controllers coming out (Jungle Razorcat for me! Unless there's one with twin sticks that does the same thing).

Now we just need the rest of the series on iOS! Oh yeah, and bring out Dragon Quest VII and the spinoff titles for 3DS! :|

Loved it all over again.

I still have this game on PS2 but when I saw it come out for iOS I jumped all over it because I fondly remember losing hrs in this amazing game. The graphics transfer over beautifully on my iPad (I recommend playing on iPad for the larger screen makes a big difference) At first I did miss the character voices but then soon found myself playing the game with the volume off anyway so that became moot. But the thing that makes me smile the most is that this is just a really great game. Being rereleased in a time where the mobile market is flooded with freemium garbage make this game stand out even more. There is the nearly $20 price tag up front sure, but come on we're talking about 50-60hrs worth of immersive gameplay here. Well worth it. I happily put my money towards such.

I don't know what these other guys are complaining

I'm a huge fan of dragon quest not only for the expansive game and literal days, even weeks worth of game play, but also for the overall goofiness and sense of humor behind the game itself. I'm really excited to see so many play station 2 games coming out for iOS (especially since you can't play them on recent play station systems) I hope this trend continues. This game is said not to run on an ipad 2, it doesn't necessarily run well but it does run. It crashes occasionally, but thanks to the auto save function I've been able to pick up pretty close to where I crashed. I'd like to see more from the series in the App Store. Maybe someday!

Amazing controls, great game

First off this is the best control scheme I've ever experienced in iOS. It's perfect to play in short bursts as well as long sessions. It utilizes the screen perfectly as you don't have to hands blocking it. I love the portrait mode as I feel having the phone in landscape mode is awkward and unbalanced. The game is also very fun, deep and beautiful. Can be A bit grindy at times but that's all part of Dragon Quest games.

Please convert more games to this control scheme!!

Runs great on iPhone 6s Plus

Portrait mode isn't as bad as it seems. This is the Japanese version of the game that did not have voice overs but the text is in English.

That being said it's a great RPG that doesn't baby you in the slightest. Highly enjoyable and once you learn how to use the camera in sync with character movement I'm actually preferring the portrait mode.

I initially held off in expectation of the 3DS version but I'm glad I didn't wait.

Amazing Game

I just finished a complete walk through of this game, and I have to say that I loved it. The controls worked great and the graphics were really good as well. I thought that it was a very fun game to play and I am hoping for a U.S. version of Dragon Quest 9 to come out. Overall very happy with the outcome of this game and excited for what comes next.

Love it!

This is almost exactly like the original. My copy for the ps2 was scratched and I couldn't play anymore and this brings back so many memories.
