Gems are vital for the game but that doesn't mean that you can't progress without them. You need time and patience to finally have a strong deck without using money. It took me 8-9 months to do it

People keep yapping about how you need gems to play. Yes that's fairly true but they seem to have either failed to notice or forgot that EK hands out gems like candy on Halloween. Ignoring the fact that every week you get 600 gems for doing the weekly events, you still get about 700-800 gems a month for just logging in. Barring that, EK throws around gems like water during their numerous events. And past that, the achievements reward you with gems quite often.
