This RPG is simply amazing. If you don't like RPGs or don't want to play a modern overly complicated RPG, but are curious of RPGs then you might want to give Chrono Trigger a try. It's the gateway RPG.

The game play alone has just the right balance of simplicity with some layers of complexity to be interesting and fun to play.

The story is captivating to say the least, with interesting characters you actually care for, which is strange since they are just 16 bit pixels.

The music and sound still holds up very very well; I find myself humming the music while I'm at work. The SNES had superior sound processing back in the day, and Square took the music score very seriously back then, which is why it's still so good today.

My only gripes are the inconsistency of Square's Enix's iOS releases being universal apps vs for iPhone only. For 10 dollars, it should have an iPad version also included. But that said, playing it on the iPad as expanded still looks and works pretty well. An upscaled version would be good for iPad and well deserved for this game in particular. Also, it seems like there is about a one month gap where you can't fully experience the complete game when iOS gets its yearly update. Some things break after the update, and it takes Square some time to allocate their iOS guys to band aid it for the year. Same applies to secret of mana which I requested (and received) a refund for the non-start issue. For the premium prices they charge, and we willingly pay as this library is a money printer, Square should be anticipating the differences in iOS versions and updating the code
during the beta period so there are no breaks in the gaming experience for the customer.

I originally played Chrono Trigger when I was a little kid. I used to go to this day care center that had a game room full of wall to wall Super Nintendos and boxes upon boxes full of games. Some of my most cherished childhood memories where inside that daycare playing games like Zelda, super Mario world, Secret of Mana, and yes, Chrono Trigger until my parents came and picked me up. Although I was far too young at the time to comprehend such complex gameplay so I never made it that far in the game. All I could remember was constantly dying at that boss battle against the dragon tank lol. Ever since then it has been a dream of mine to be able to play through the entire game, and now my dreams have finally come true. This game is simply spectacular. Everything from the engrossing story line to the top-notch tech battle system. The game feels like a 70 hour epic even though it's only about 30-40 hours including all the side quests. I just beat the game last night and just started a new game plus and I still have the dimensional vortex side quest as well so there is soo many hours of incredibly unforgettable and magical gameplay to be had here. I will never forget this super intense trip down memory lane!!

First you have to have the joystick set to allow both running and walking. Once you get into the screen with the two trees and wind don't just run up there. It is just going to frustrate you. First just slightly move to the right to align with the first tree. Then run up, being careful not to move your finger too far from the center of the joystick. It's a little tricky, but it works. As soon as you reach the safety zone below the first tree rock your finger back just a smidgen to walk instead of run so that you don't accidentally slip around it before time.
As soon as the wind dies down, don't try to maneuver the team left or right, if you are slightly to the right of the center of the tree (which you should be if you moved right when you came in), just run forward. Don't worry about walking this time... You'll hit dead center on the second tree and it won't slip you by on either side. Once the wind dies down, your home free. Run on up the mountain!
Use the same principal for the ice bridge only in reverse. Walking most of the time while sliding slightly left... Run just a smidgen to move north on the bridge then rock back to walking... It took me 7 tries my first time on the ice bridge. Good luck!!!

I've never owned an SNES, so I had never played this game prior to getting this app. I had just heard that the game was great, and I saw that there was an iOS port of it, so I bought it for the generous price of $10. This game delivered much more than I was expecting. It has intriguing characters, an epic quest line, and some of the best (and most unique) mechanics I've ever seen in an RPG. You might hear some gripes about the controls, especially in Death Peak, and I will agree with those complaints, but those problems did nothing to limit how much I loved playing this game and how great this port is. Just be warned: This version of the game is more difficult than any other version, so you might have to grind a bit, but don't let that turn you off. Even with the added difficulty, this port is the reason why I now consider Chrono Trigger to be one of the best games of all time, and I could not recommend it more to anyone who is a fan of RPGs. I honestly don't regret not playing it on the SNES first because this game is timeless and is absolutely fantastic no matter how or when you play it.

While yes, there are some graphical issues as of yes on the newer devices... This is a great game that as far as we can tell will be seeing an update for the 5 devices. Sure it doesn't fit the screen fully (which isn't even a big deal compared to the funky character models which I'm waiting to be fixed to play). As far as I can tell that when this is optimized it will be amazingly fun. Considering you can't expect the controls to be spot on without a controller, I would argue that this is as good as it gets. As the controls are indeed easy to get the hang of and aren't detrimental to the gameplay (as far as I can tell). I only played for a little while as the character models throw me off and I'm a bit of perfectionist. Once the update comes this game will indeed be worth playing again and again, so I would consider this game an investment. I am excited for the many hours I will spend in the world of ChronoTrigger (a game that if you try to find on SNES you'll be lucky to find one at a reasonable price).

I'm a few hours into it. I loved this game when it first released and played through many re-releases. The game is still great. The iOS port is mostly good except. It takes some getting used to the movement. run/walk is sensitive to how far your finger moves. It's hard to walk and precision is difficult while running. It means you may have to take a second try at grabbing the capsules or talking to people. Also, I can't dodge some enemies as well as I used to. The other issue is enemy selection. If I want to use cyclone to target the middle enemy don't expect to be as fast as using a controller... And occasionally accidentally selecting an enemy rather than switching.

Overall it's a great game and decent port. It's not the best port but I like it's on a platform that'll stay with me for years. The menu system works just fine it just needs help in movement and enemy selection. It's missing features from other ports like the Animated cutscenes. I hear the DS extras are there but I haven't seen them yet.

I love this game and I have it on my d.s. but I don't carry it around so it's great for the iPod. One thing I can't get over is the 5 letter name. My name is 6 letters and I really want to put my name and some of my friends names or names that are 6 letters or more. Also I think you should make a control pad on the side that looks like the original d.s. one with the four rods and where if you circle your finger around it your character will go in a circle the controls are ok now for me but this idea may make them better. All in all I like the game but I think you should make a change name option or at least 8 letters in your name. That's my opinion. Please take this into consideration because I want an update and I want the game to be able to let 8 letters, 7 at the least but it's a great game so far although my iPods battery keeps failing. So please make an update quick so where you can have more letters in your name because I want to start the game!!! Thanks,

Chrono Trigger is possibly the most fun JRPG ever made, as the turn-based battles take place on-screen, the enemies can be seen and avoided most of the time and so aren't "random." Combat is simple, yet fun because of the ability to perform double and triple "techs," where your party members combine to inflict stronger attacks on enemies. Basically, Chrono Trigger is fun for even those who would normally dislike turn-based, menu-driven combat. I don't feel I need to get into the likable cast of characters, the extraordinary soundtrack, the well-paced storyline or the innovative time-travel quest. You can look all of that up rather easily online. You'll also come to know how much and how often this game has been praised, by both fans and critics alike. I just wanted to point out that this is one turn-based RPG which anyone can enjoy, even for those who don't much like the genre. This is a must-own app for anyone who likes video games and who doesn't already own this classic.

I just finished my first play through and am halfway through another New Game +. No issues so far.

I'm actually pleased with how fast the game is on an iPhone 5S - practically nonexistent load times. Also pleased with how easy the controls were, once I got used to moving around. I understand the complaint from other reviewers, but it's really not difficult once you get used to it. The only spot I had a particularly frustrating time with the touchscreen joystick was Death's Peak, but I still made it through on the third or fourth try. Not bad, considering.

If you have trouble with the joystick movement, I suggest you go to Settings and switch movement to run only (instead of both walk and run). It's way easier to control.

I do kind of miss the animated cutscenes from the PS1 version, but this version is definitely worth buying if you don't have (or want to carry around) a Nintendo DS.

Game it's showing its age but it's age makes it a classic. This is my all time favorite RPG and the overall story and gameplay is top notch. I'm playing it on a iPhone 6+ and I am having no problems what so ever. The only negative I've seen is it doesn't fit the entire screen cause of its format ( not sure if it fits iPhone 5 or 4 perfect but just leaves a black space on both sides but nothing to noticeable) and its a little blurry when looking at the overall map but the enhanced sharp looking menu and option screens ( stats, weapons, items, and gear) look fantastic. I havnt reached death peak yet so I will be doing a follow up. Right now I'm having a blast on all the old memories. ( lol I hope I remembered all the right things to do in the fair so I don't go to jail )
I'm glad I bought it because it was well worth it even at $10

I play it on iPad mini, always have. I stopped playing for a while just cause of all the new games out on iOS. But wen I finally returned to playing it yesterday a part of the screen is cut off on the top part to where I have no idea how much HP the charters have during battle. I can't really continue to play when the charters can die anytime and I wouldn't even know it. Hoping for an update so I can finally beat this game. If not then I guess I'll end up deleting it. Granted I know it's an iPhone game but I'd figure it would be able to fix on an iPad mini screen like it used to.

Update: Perfect due to the update, unfortunately I delegated my game on my iPad mini so now I have to start all over but with my iPhone 6 plus I'll be enjoying this game to the max. Thanks!!

This game is an incredible game. I've heard about graphics issues and a crash having to do with X-Strike but I haven't had either of those problems. If I've gotten to the Fiendlord's Keep with out any problems than I for one think that I'm good for the game. :) Good luck with Lavos BTW :D!!!!!

PS. I'm very sorry to change my 5 stars to 3 but on my dad's new phone the game is awful for the following reasons...

1. The graphics are super blurry. Enough said!!

2. THE CHARACTERS LOOK LIKE THEYVE LOST THEIR EYEBALLS!!!!! That is so disturbing.

This game is fantastic, I usually don't write app reviews but I love this game.While I agree the combat and controls for this game is flawed to say the least,the amazing RPG that we all came to love is still there it doesn't matter if your a veteran RPG gamer or have never played one you have to get the game!!! I fell in love with it and have played it countless times and if you even know remotely what a good game is then you will love this game.The story is 15 hours long but it will feel like it's 40hours long with all the fun you will have in it.So I highly suggest doing yourself a favor and picking up this game for unmatched RPG goodness.

The game is virtually perfect. Unlike other Square games ported to the IPhone, there is no distracting visual or gameplay change. An almost perfect port of a perfect SNES game for me. The battle system, the characters, and the story work beautifully together, and the touch screen controls aren't much distracting, surprisingly. The only parts that aren't 100% is when you try to get up Death Peak with touch controls, and there is no option for the cutscenes or screen layout like the DS version. Also, the menus during battle can be a little slow during tougher fights. P.S., the music is amazing. :)

I waited until I got to the part that all the whiners were talking about, death peak ... I wanted to buy this game for a while, I was skeptical about doing so because of the review people left ... Let me tell you this, there is no issue on the controls what so ever - if you can't get past that part it's not the game or the controls fault you just have no control over your thumb ... I admit it took me 4-5 tries on the tree part and 2 on the icy edge one but even that is not out of the ordinary ... Thank you incompetent people for delaying me from buying this game.

Play this baby with the sound all the way up! The controls take a little getting used to, but once you get the touch screen controls down you're fine. The game looks and sounds great (I'm playing on the iPhone 6) It's everything I remember from the SNES version and more. I just finished my first play through and have already started the New Game + no complaints here! A must download for classic RPG fans. Also not a bad idea to switch the movement from "Both" to "Walk" in the settings. Just a tad fidgety but, as stated earlier, nothing to complain about.

First, what is wrong with all these reviews. I just finished beating the game and the "DS" extra material. Did not have ONE issue the entire time. This game is a masterpiece it brings me back to my childhood storming through Magus' keep or finally figuring out the sealed chests upgrade without the help of a guide. This game is EASILY one of the best games EVER made and you would be hard pressed to find someone who has played through the game to disagree with me. I'm sorry that your phones can't handle the greatness! Mine must just be a boss.

Wonderful port of one of the best RPGs ever made. The only thing holding it back has nothing to do with the game itself. It is a feature that would modernize it for our current time and that is cloud saving. I bought this game when it first became available on the App Store. I just hit a new device and now I have to start all over again. I would like to keep my current save file but without cloud saving it is not possible. SquareEnix if your reading this please update with cloud saving.

My brother showed me this game on his Nintendo DS a couple years ago. Since then I loved the game and one day I decided to go on my phone and see if I could play one of my favorite games on the go. So I went to the App Store and searched for this game and guess what it was there for a great price. So I bought it and I am so glad I did because this is a great game! This game should be worth $20 but it's not.
This is a game I highly suggest you try out.

I love the additions of the extra areas from the DS version (Dimensional Vortex, Lost Sanctum). I was surprised because I hadn't played the DS version and it really added to the fun of the original game.

The controls are not as bad as some make it seem for Death Peak. I made it in my second shot just taking it easy and paying attention on an iPhone 5.

Well worth the promotional $4.99 I picked it up for during the holidays.
