TeaterTolk - The app for speaking subtitle and audio description in cinemas

More people will be able to enjoy the Cinema. Many people avoid foreign films at the cinema because they do not have time to read subtitles. Others because they can not see. Now we developed an application, MovieTalk, for smartphones, ipods and ipads.With it, the user get subtitles or audio description spoken in their own headphones.

The solution is technically simple. Speech enabling and audio description is applied to the digital video. A computer sends the sound via wifi to the phone. The user puts the phone in airplane mode, connect to the system's wireless network and activates the app, and then select either text reading, audio description or a combination of both. It is only the loaded audio that gets streamed. For the audience it will be as if the mother would whisper in your ear. During the performance the user puts their screen at rest and the sound will keep playing in their headphones, so no one in the surrounding area becomes disturbed.

Many are behind the project. The solution developed within the project Appealing Banner cinema, run by Dyslexia Association FMLS. Development is done in collaboration with users, mostly people with reading difficulties. But the National Association of the Visually Impaired, Visually Impaired Youth, Aphasia Association, young people and adults (FUB) also participated. Many might benefit from reading text and audio description. Our project is funded by PTS (Post and Telecom Agency), we have also been one of the participants in the Swedish Film Institute's projects Available cinema.
