Wonder for Dash & Dot Robots [Android]

HOW IT WORKS

In the Wonder app, kids explore a mysterious map with trusted pals Dash or Dot. After joining the Wonder League, kids begin a coding quest to uncover lost scrolls that reveal play designs for Dash and Dot. These guided challenges help kids learn to code on their own and gain the confidence and skills they need to create new inventions for their robots and toys. Once they are done coding, they can put their phone or device away; Dash and Dot will remember all their coding adventures.

Code in Wonder is made up of modular states that contain behaviors like lights, sounds, and movements. The robot can be in one state at a time and transitions to another state linked to it when receiving a cue - like a sound it hears or an obstacle it sees. Cues can also be instant transitions, allowing kids to put together multiple behaviors to make an animation.

Kids can create dances for Dash, allowing Dash to move different body parts and flash lights at the same time. If Dash hears a groovy beat, Dash might get excited and spin around. When Dash hears a clap, Dash starts looking for a partner. If Dash meets a partner, Dash can bow and ask the partner for a dance. Kids can also transform Dot into a funny fortune teller. Each time you ask a question and shake Dot, Dot will give a different answer! Code can range from simple sequences or complex behavior trees, making for a low floor and high ceiling of learning and exploration.

WHY WE MADE IT

Since creating Dash and Dot, we’ve been thinking hard about how to give children that moment of achievement and delight when they bring their robots to life. Existing visual programming interfaces are sequential, and the programs created made Dash and Dot feel… well… robotic. Real world objects feel life-like when they are able to do express emotions, engage their whole body in the expressions, and respond to their environment in real time.

We wanted Dash to be able to whistle and look around while walking, reacting to things that are encountered and looking up at you when you call Dash’s name. Until now, the only people who could do this were people with advanced backgrounds in computer science and robotics. Wonder is a fun and intuitive way to learn programming, bringing the magic of coding to every member of every home.
