Linked the app to my Apple Pay, tried it at my local Mobil and it worked fine. Will it replace my SpeedPass fob? Probably not right away, but it's good to know I have an alternative method to pay besides swiping my card at the risk of it being skimmed or if the fob is on another key ring, etc.
